Have you ever wondered about the meaning and purpose of your life? So how can you go and discover your purpose? Let me use a song to illustrate this common pursuit for most people. Are you familiar with that popular 1990 song by singer Michael W. Smith “Place In This World?” I was in high school when this song was released and it struck a chord in my heart that continues to ring loud and clear. If you’re not familiar with some of the lyrics, here a few lines:
Do you find yourself unmotivated and unexcited to get out of bed each morning to go to work?
Are you spending a lot of time wishing you were engaged in work that not only energized your mind but most importantly, engaged your heart? For years I was engaged in work that I dreaded. Work that caused me to be physically drained, mentally discouraged and emotionally overwhelmed. Every. Single. Day. I had zero energy left to give my family at the end of my workday.
As I look back over my 40 plus years of life, I’ve realized how much I just drifted through life with no real understanding of my God-given purpose. I simply couldn’t figure out my place in this world. And because I didn’t know WHY I existed, my life felt meaningless, directionless and useless.
For the past few years, I have kicked off the new year by deciding on one word (or theme) to focus my thoughts and efforts on throughout the year. But this year, I decided to start my year off by beginning a vision of the end of my year in mind.
Before I created any new goals, I wanted to have a clear picture in mind of who I wanted to become, where I wanted to go, and what I wanted to accomplish by the end of 2019. Once I had a clear vision of what I wanted to see happen in my life, I knew my goals and actions would follow.
