9 DESTRUCTIVE DEVICES
1. Distraction
Distraction is when you place all your focus and attention on things outside of God. It can be work, your spouse, children, community service, school, etc. It includes all of life’s demands, pressures, commitments, and responsibilities. Ask yourself, what has most captured my attention? Is my mind stayed on God (Is. 26:3)? If not, get focused.
2. Darkness
Darkness is when you live your life unaware of who you are (your God-given identity) why you’re here (your God-given Purpose), and what you’re re supposed to do (your God-given mission). The longer Satan can keep you in the dark concerning who you are, the more he can hold you back from fulfilling your divine purpose. Living in darkness also means willfully choosing to sin. Prov. 4:9 says the way of the wicked is like darkness; they do not know over what they stumble. Run from sin.
3. Doubt
Doubt is when Satan tries to get you to question God. It sounds like, “Did God really say” (Gen. 3:1) or “will God really do what He said He would do“? Any thought that would make you question God’s word, plan, provision, purposes, love or good character, watch out. It’s a trap! Do what Jesus did and boldly declare to Satan what is written in the Word of God, and watch him flee (Mt. 4:4).
4. Disorder
Disorder is when we find our minds in a state of fear and confusion. We can’t seem to discern or know what God is saying or doing in our lives. We remain stuck in crisis and survival mode—frantic for answers and solutions to our problems. When we run to people, possessions, sex, drugs, alcohol, tv and social media above God for peace of mind, you’ll stay dazed in confusion. But a mind stayed on God will be kept in perfect peace (Is. 26:3). For God did not give you a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and soundness of mind (1Tim 1:7).
5. Deceit
When you are deceived, you believe lies as truth. Lies such as “your life doesn’t matter, no one loves you, you are all alone and abandoned, you are not lovable”. Being deceived means you are also being misled by someone’s voice–your own, Satan’s or people. Any voice that leads you away from God’s will and His truth as revealed in His word–is a voice of deceit. Steer clear of it.
6. Disappointment
When life hasn’t turned out the way you had hoped or expected, we experience the sadness of disappointment. Disappointment is when we say to ourselves “this is not the way things were supposed to be” or we use “if” statements. Mary and Martha made “if” statements when they expressed their disappointment to Jesus when he arrived 4 days after their brother Lazarus died (Jn. 11:17). They said, “if you had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.” Talk about disappointment and loss of all hope.
Getting stuck in hypothetical mindsets such as “if only” or “I wish I shoulda, coulda, woulda”, may cause you to miss what God wants to do with your disappointment. For Mary and Martha, he turned their disappointment into a miracle. Choose to focus on God’s reality. Because His reality can turn any disappointment into a declaration of His miraculous power made manifest in your life.
Time to take up your weapons and fight
When we remain ignorant of the devices Satan uses to try and steal, kill and destroy our joy, peace, and purpose, we ultimately will be destroyed. But when we are aware of them, we can have the advantage and defend our lives skillfully and supernaturally. We are at war. So take up your spiritual weapons and fight!
Stay tuned for my next post so you can discover the 3 other devices the enemy tries to use to destroy you. But remember, no weapon formed against you shall prosper (Is. 54:17) because GREATER IS HE WHO IS IN YOU THAN HE THAT IS IN THE WORLD (1Jn. 4:4)!!
